WHAT IS A
Side?

A side bet is the most basic wager in sports you’re simply betting on who wins, whether that’s a team or a player. It comes in two flavors: the point spread (bet the margin) and the moneyline (bet the outright winner). Simple to grasp, available on every sport, and the backbone of straight betting.

HOW TO BET A SIDE

Spread or moneyline you’re betting who comes out on top.

01

POINT SPREAD

Bet the margin the favorite lays points, the underdog gets them.

02

MONEYLINE

Bet the outright winner, no spread — just win and you win.

03

THE PRICE (-110)

The vig on a spread risk $110 to win $100.

TWO WAYS TO PLAY A SIDE

A side bet boils down to picking who wins. With a point spread, oddsmakers set a margin to level the teams the favorite must win by more than the spread, the underdog can win outright or lose within it. With a moneyline, there’s no spread at all: pick the winner and you cash.

SPREAD EXAMPLE — NBA

76ers +7.5 (-110)   vs.   Celtics -7.5 (-110).

CELTICS -7.5

Celtics must win by 8+ to cover.

76ERS +7.5

76ers cover with a win, or a loss by 7 or fewer.

-110 = risk $110 to win $100.

MONEYLINE EXAMPLE — NFL

On the moneyline there’s no margin you just need your team to win. Example: Patriots -150 vs. Dolphins +130. A Patriots bet risks $150 to win $100; a Dolphins bet wins $130 on $100. Favorites cost more; underdogs pay more.

Patriots -150

risk $150 to win $100

Dolphins +130

risk $100 to win $130

WHY EVERYONE BETS SIDES

Sides are the most popular bet for good reason but they aren’t free money. Here’s the honest split:

WHY BETTORS LOVE THEM
•  Simple to understand
•  Every sport, every book
•  Balanced favorite/underdog odds

WATCH OUT FOR
• Spreads move before kickoff/tip
•  The vig means ~53% to profit
•  Favorites don’t always cover
•  Emotional picks cost money

SIDES COME IN A FEW FORMS

No point spread. Negative odds mark the favorite and show the amount needed to win $100; positive odds mark the underdog and show profit on a $100 bet.

Bet the margin of victory.

Point spread

Combined score a separate market, often bet alongside a side.

Totals (O/U)

Bet the outright winner.

Moneyline

The same side bet on a single game segment.

Halftime / Quarter

AVAILABLE ACROSS THE BOARD

WRAPPING IT UP

A side bet is where almost every bettor starts pick a winner, by spread or moneyline, and you’re in. Learn to read both, respect the vig, watch the line move, and keep emotion out of it, and the simplest bet on the board can also be one of the smartest.
