WHAT IS A TEAM TOTAL?
A team total is an over/under bet on how many points, runs or goals one team scores. The other team’s score doesn’t matter, and neither does who wins. It works in football, basketball, baseball and hockey.
ONE TEAM • ONE NUMBER
3 SIMPLE PARTS
The book posts one team’s number. You pick over or under. Only that side counts.
01
THE LINE
Chiefs 27.5, Celtics 114.5.
02
OVER OR UNDER
More or less than the number.
03
ONE SIDE ONLY
Win or lose, it’s irrelevant.
HALF THE SCOREBOARD
A game total asks how many combined points both teams score. A team total cuts that in half and asks about one side. It’s the cleanest way to bet one offense or defense.
ONE NUMBER DECIDES IT
Bills at Dolphins. The 47.5 game total is split into Bills 26.5 and Dolphins 21.5. You bet Bills over 26.5. Buffalo gets 31 and loses 34-31 in a shootout. Your ticket cashes. Had Buffalo won 24-10, the over loses even though they won.
The loss didn’t matter. The 31 did.
BILLS vs DOLPHINS
BILLS 26.5
OVER WINS AT 27+
DOLPHINS 21.5
UNDER WINS AT ≤ 21
THE OTHER SCORE NEVER MATTERS
-110 EACH SIDE, USUALLY
Standard pricing is -110: risk $110 to win $100. In a lopsided game one side may carry heavier juice like -125.
$110
RISK → WIN $100
-125
HEAVIER JUICE
WATCH THE HOOK
Most team totals sit at a half-point (27.5, 114.5) so there’s no push. A whole number can land exactly and refund your stake. Overtime usually counts. Check the rules.
UNDER ≤ 27
27.5
≥ 28 OVER
THE SPLIT ISN’T EVEN
The two team totals add up to the game total, but the favorite carries the bigger number. Bills 26.5 and Dolphins 21.5 tell you who the book expects to score.

TEAM TOTAL VS. THE FIELD
Team totals grade one side of the scoreboard. Other markets need the whole game.
1/2
TEAM TOTAL
One team’s score; the result doesn’t matter.
ALL
GAME TOTAL
Both teams combined; the whole game must deliver.
+/-
SPREAD
Bet the margin; win by enough or lose by less.
WIN
MONEYLINE
Pick the winner; scoring volume is irrelevant.
WRAPPING IT UP
A team total is the simplest way to bet one side of the scoreboard. Pick a team, pick over or under, and forget about who wins. Do the homework on pace, matchups and the one player who controls the number, and you’ll find spots a game total can’t.
ONE SIDE. ONE NUMBER.
FIVE RULES BEFORE YOU BET
Team totals look simple, and they are. But the number moves on pace, one key player and the overtime rule. Five habits keep you on the right side of it.
01
SKIP THE WINNER
Only one team’s score counts. Not the result.
02
KEY PLAYER FIRST
Pitcher, goalie or QB moves the number most
03
CHECK THE HOOK
Half-points can’t push; whole numbers can.
04
RESPECT THE PACE
Slow tempo and strong defense drag totals down
05
READ THE OT RULE
Overtime usually counts. Confirm before you bet.
