HOW TO BET ON Golf
Golf offers fewer markets than the big team sports, but the ones it offers pay. Outrights, top-10s, head-to-head matchups, props and futures, all built around four majors a year. Here is how each one works, with the odds.
FIELD • FINISH • PRICE
3 MOVING PARTS
Every golf bet asks one thing: where does your player finish against the field?
01
THE FIELD
150 players, one winner.
02
THE FINISH
Win, top 10, or beat one man.
03
THE PRICE
Fractions and moneylines.
PICK THE OUTRIGHT WINNER
One player beats the whole field. At a major the shortest price is about 10/1. Scheffler 12/1, McIlroy 18/1, Rahm 20/1, Schauffele 25/1: $100 on any one returns $1,200+.
MATCHUPS: BEAT ONE MAN
A matchup pairs two players; yours just has to post the better 72-hole score. Neither needs to win the event. Scheffler -160 vs. McIlroy +120: lay $160 to win $100 on Scheffler, or bet $100 to win $120 on McIlroy.
Same score after 72 holes? Most books call it a push.
SCHEFFLER VS MCILROY
SCHEFFLER
-160 • LAY $160
MCILROY
+120 • WIN $120
LOWER SCORE WINS, NOT THE EVENT
12/1 MEANS $12 FOR EVERY $1
Outrights show fractions: 12/1 pays $1,200 on $100. Matchups use moneylines: -160 lays $160 to win $100.
$1200
12/1 ON $100
$160
RISK → WIN $100
TOP 3, 5 OR 10?
Finishing top 10 is far easier than winning, so the price drops with the target. Scheffler: 12/1 to win, 7/1 top 3, 5/1 top 5, 3/1 top 10. Ties are dead-heat reduced.
TOP 3 • 7/1
5/1
TOP 10 3/1
PROPS: HOLE-IN-ONE?
Props cover the fun stuff and the skill stuff. Will anyone ace a hole this week: Yes +110, No -150. Majors a player wins this year: none -200, one +220, two +800.
ACE • YES

FOUR MAJORS, YEAR-ROUND TOUR
Majors draw the deepest boards. The tour runs weekly, so a line is always up.

THE OPEN
PGA TOUR
FEDEX
STRAIGHT VS. THE FIELD
A straight bet settles on one player, one week. These stretch the wager across a season.
1x
Straight
Outright, matchup, top 10 or prop on one event.
FUT
FUTURES
FedEx Cup: +1500 preseason, near +800 by playoffs.
ALL
PARLAY
Link matchups; every leg must win to pay.
2+
MULTI-PICK
Back 3 or 4 outrights; one winner still profits.
WRAPPING IT UP
Golf pays best when you respect the field. Start with matchups, where one player only has to beat one, use top-10s to trim the variance on outrights, and treat props and FedEx futures as long holds priced for patience, not weekly income.
FORM > FAME
FIVE RULES BEFORE YOU BET
Golf lines are built on 150-man fields, cuts and weather. These five rules keep you from betting a name at a bad price, chasing a 25/1 that never contends, or forgetting the cut.
01
CHECK THE COURSE
Some players own certain tracks. Price it in.
02
SPREAD OUTRIGHTS
Back 3 or 4 at 12/1+; one win covers the rest.
03
MAKE THE CUT
Miss Friday and every full-week bet is dead.
04
MATCHUPS FIRST
Beating one man is easier than beating 150.
05
READ TIE RULES
Dead-heat rules cut top-10 payouts on ties.
