WHAT IS A RUN LINE BET?

The run line is baseball’s point spread. The favorite gives 1.5 runs, the underdog gets 1.5 runs, and the odds shift to match. It is how you bet a side in a sport where a 7-point spread makes no sense.

ONE SIDE • 1.5 RUNS

3 MOVING PARTS

Spread, price and margin. Get all three straight before you bet the run line.

01

THE SPREAD

Almost always 1.5 runs.

02

THE PRICE

Laying runs makes it cheaper.

03

THE MARGIN

Not who wins. By how many.

WIN BY 2, OR LOSE BY 1.

Baseball is low-scoring, so the run line uses a 1.5-run spread. The favorite must win by 2 or more; the underdog can win outright or lose by exactly 1 and still cash.

A MONEYLINE WITH A SPREAD

Rays at Red Sox. Boston is the moneyline favorite at -120, Tampa Bay the dog at +110. On the run line the prices flip: Red Sox -1.5 pays +165 because Boston must win by 2+. Rays +1.5 costs -195 because Tampa can lose by one.

Half-run spread, so there is no push. One side wins.

THE HALF-RUN REMOVES THE PUSH

+165 VS -195: SAME GAME

Laying 1.5 runs pays plus money; getting 1.5 runs costs you. On a $100 base, the two tickets look like this.

RISK → WIN $165

$195

RISK → WIN $100

GRADED BY THE MARGIN

Every final score lands in one of three buckets. Red Sox by 2 or more cashes -1.5. Red Sox by exactly 1 cashes +1.5. Any Rays win cashes +1.5. Two of three favor the dog.

MONEYLINE OR RUN LINE

The moneyline asks who wins; the run line asks by how much. A -200 moneyline favorite often becomes plus money at -1.5, and the dog can lose by one and still pay.odds mark the favorite and show the amount needed to win $100; positive odds mark the underdog and show profit on a $100 bet.

Any baseball game on the board carries a run line next to the moneyline.

RUN LINE VS. THE FIELD

Same game, different questions. Only the run line and its alt cousin ask about the margin.

1.5

RUN LINE

Pick a side against a 1.5-run spread.

ML

MONEYLINE

Pick the winner, no spread; favorites cost more.

2.5

ALT RUN LINE

Spread of 2.5 or more; higher payout, higher risk.

O/U

TOTAL

Combined runs over or under; no side to pick.

WRAPPING IT UP

The run line turns baseball into a spread sport. Favorites at -1.5 get a better price for winning by 2; underdogs at +1.5 pay even when they lose by one. Know the pitching, know the park, and know that a one-run game decides everything.

MARGIN > MONEYLINE

FIVE RULES BEFORE YOU BET

Run line bets live and die on margin. Roughly a quarter of MLB games end as one-run games, so handicap the things that create margin: starters, parks and form.

01

COMPARE THE ML

Only lay -1.5 if the price jump is worth the run.

02

START WITH ARMS

Margin comes from pitching mismatches.

03

RESPECT 1-RUN

One-run games happen constantly; +1.5 gets paid.

04

CHECK THE PARK

Hitter’s parks widen margins; pitcher’s don’t.

05

ALTS ON PURPOSE

Move to -2.5 or +2.5 for a reason, not the payout.
