WHAT IS a point spread?

A point spread turns a lopsided matchup into something close to a coin flip. Instead of just picking who wins, you bet on the margin: the favorite has to win by more than the spread, and the underdog can lose by less or win outright and still cash. It’s the most popular way to bet football and basketball, and once it clicks, it changes how you watch every game.

NOT WHO WINS • BY HOW MUCH

3 CORE MARKETS

The favorite gives points. The underdog gets them. You pick a side of the number.

01

THE FAVORITE (-)

Lays points, e.g. -3.5. Must win by more than the spread to cover.

02

THE UNDERDOG (+)

Gets points, e.g. +3.5. Wins outright or loses by less than the spread.

03

THE PRICE (−110)

The juice risk $110 to win $100. That extra $10 is the book’s cut.

YOU’RE BETTING THE MARGIN, NOT THE WINNER

Point-spread betting means predicting the margin of victory — what’s called betting “against the spread” (ATS). Oddsmakers hand each team a handicap to balance the action: the favorite carries a negative number (-3.5) and must win by more than that, while the underdog carries a positive number (+3.5) and can win or simply keep it close. Same game, two evenly-priced sides.

HOW IT WORKS A QUICK EXAMPLE

Example:

Rams +3.5 (-110)   vs.   Cowboys -3.5 (-110)

Cowboys are the favorite

they must win by 4 or more to cover.

Rams are the underdog

they cover with a win, or a loss by 3 or fewer.

Cowboys win by exactly 3? They don’t cover Rams bettors cash.

READING THE ODDS (−110 ISN’T POINTS)

Don’t mix up the two numbers. The spread (-3.5) is the points; the price in parentheses (-110) is what you risk. “-110” means bet $110 to win $100 — that extra $10 is the juice, how the book profits. Sometimes each side is priced differently, like Cowboys -3.5 (-105) and Rams +3.5 (-115), which nudges money toward the less-popular side. Read both: one sets the challenge, the other sets the cost.

COVER, PUSH, OR LOSS

Three things can happen against the spread. Beat the number and you “cover.” Land exactly on it and it’s a push — your stake comes back. Miss it and you lose, even if your team won the game outright. Half-point spreads (-3.5) exist specifically to remove the tie and force a winner.

OUTCOME VISUAL

3 CORE OUTCOMES

01

Cowboys win by 4+ (-3.5)

COVER — Cowboys bettors win

02

Cowboys win by exactly 3 (-3.5)

NO COVER — Rams bettors win

03

Cowboys win by exactly 3 (-3)

PUSH — every bet refunded

SPREADS BY SPORT

Spreads rule the high-scoring sports. In baseball and hockey the moneyline usually leads, with a fixed 1.5-run “run line” or 1.5-goal “puck line” standing in for the spread.

WHERE YOU’LL SEE SPREADS

Point spreads are everywhere in football and basketball, and appear as fixed lines in baseball and hockey.

SPREAD VS. THE OTHER STRAIGHT BETS

Point

spread

Bet the margin. Priced evenly on both sides; the favorite has to cover the number.

Money

line

Bet who wins outright. No margin to cover, but big favorites pay very little.

Total

(over/under)

Bet the combined score — not the winner and not the margin.

Why

the spread

Best when you like a side but the moneyline price is too short (favorite) or you want a cushion (underdog).

WRAPPING IT UP

The point spread challenges you to go beyond picking winners — your team has to cover. Get the fundamentals down (favorite vs. underdog, covering, the push), learn to read the odds, and watch how lines move on injuries, weather, and betting volume. Do that and your against-the-spread decisions sharpen fast.

DISCIPLINE > HUNCHES

FIVE RULES BEFORE YOU BET

Before placing any bet, it’s essential to understand the fundamentals. These five rules will help you stay disciplined, avoid impulsive decisions, and approach betting with a clear strategy.

01

STUDY THE MATCHUPS

Look at specific offense-vs-defense edges, not just overall records.

02

WATCH LINE MOVEMENT

Spread shifts show where the sharp money is going.

03

FACTOR IN HOME FIELD

Home teams carry a built-in edge baked into the number.

04

DON’T BET WITH YOUR HEART

Emotion clouds judgment — stick to the data.

05

RESPECT KEY NUMBERS

In football, 3 and 7 are the most common margins. Bet around them.
