WHAT IS AN EXACTA?
An exacta is a horse racing bet where you pick the first- and second-place finishers in the exact order. Nail both spots in sequence and you cash; get them backwards and you lose.
TWO HORSES • ONE ORDER
3 WAYS TO PLAY
Name the top two in sequence, then choose how much order insurance you want to buy.
01
TWO HORSES
Pick first and second place.
02
EXACT ORDER
1-4 is not 4-1.
03
BOX OR KEY
Cover more orders, pay more.
FIRST AND SECOND, IN ORDER
Also called a perfecta or exactor, the exacta is the first step up from win, place and show. Instead of one horse you need two, and you need them in sequence.
BOX IT OR PLAY IT STRAIGHT
You like #1 at 3/1 and #4 at 8/1 to run one-two but can’t split them. A $1 exacta box on 1-4 is two bets, 1-4 and 4-1, for $2. The race comes back 1-4 and the $1 exacta pays $42.60. A $2 straight 1-4 would have paid $85.20.
The box buys insurance; the straight buys the payout.
EXACTA 1-4
$1 BOX
1-4 OR 4-1 • $42.60
$2 STRAIGHT
1-4 ONLY • $85.20
SAME $2, TWO DIFFERENT TICKETS
WHAT THE BOX COSTS
Each horse in a box pairs with every other in both orders. Combos = horses × (horses − 1), times your base bet.
$6
3-HORSE $1 BOX
$12
4-HORSE $1 BOX
KEY ONE, SAVE MONEY
Key #9 to win over 2, 8 and 10 and you hold three bets: 9-2, 9-8, 9-10. That’s $3 at $1. A 4-horse box of the same horses is $12, mostly on orders where #9 runs second.
STRAIGHT $1
KEY $3
BOX $12
CROWD SETS THE PRICE
Exactas are pari-mutuel. Every dollar goes into one pool, the track takes its cut and winners split the rest. Two favorites pay little; two longshots pay hundreds.
$1 EXACTA
$50
$2 EXACTA
$100
WHERE EXACTAS LIVE
Every tote board offers it, from a weekday claimer to the Kentucky Derby.
STAKES
DERBY
HARNESS
DIRT
TURF
EXACTA VS. THE FIELD
Two horses, exact order. Other exotics loosen the order or add races.
1-2
EXACTA
First and second in exact order.
ANY
QUINELLA
Top two in either order; easier to hit, pays less.
1-3
TRIFECTA
Top three in exact order; harder, bigger payouts.
2R
DAILY DOUBLE
Winners of two straight races, not two horses.
WRAPPING IT UP
An exacta is two horses, first and second, in the right order. Play it straight for the biggest return, box it when you can’t split your top two, or key one horse to stretch your budget. The fewer people who share your opinion, the more it pays.
COUNT BEFORE YOU PUNCH
FIVE RULES BEFORE YOU BET
The exacta rewards structure. Know what the ticket costs, key when you’re confident, and buy order insurance only when you actually need it.
01
COUNT THE COMBOS
A 4-horse $1 box is $12, not $4.
02
KEY WHEN SURE
If one horse wins, a key beats a box on cost.
03
SKIP TWO FAVES
The crowd has it, and the payout will show it.
04
CHECK WILL-PAYS
Probable prices post before the race; read them.
05
BOX ON PURPOSE
Boxing halves your return; do it for a reason.
