WIN, PLACE, SHOW EXPLAINED
Win, place and show are the three simplest bets in horse racing. One horse, one ticket, and the only question is how far down the finish you’re willing to let it run and still get paid.
ONE HORSE • THREE BETS
3 BASIC BETS
One horse, one ticket. The question is how far down the finish it can run and pay.
01
WIN
First place. Biggest payout.
02
PLACE
First or second. Two ways in.
03
SHOW
Top three. Safest, smallest.
THREE LEVELS OF RISK
Win needs first. Place pays on first or second, the same amount either way. Show pays on any top-three finish at one flat price. Three pools, three prices, one horse.
ONE HORSE, THREE TICKETS
You like #5 at 4/1. A $2 win bet returns $10 if it wins: $8 profit plus your stake. The same horse pays $4.60 to place and $3.20 to show. #5 wins and all three pay. #5 runs second and the win ticket is torn up, but place and show pay.
Third? Only the show bettor collects: $3.20.

WHAT A $2 WIN TICKET PAYS
Win odds convert straight to dollars. Multiply the odds by $2 for the profit, then add your $2 back.

WIN, PLACE OR SHOW
Each step down adds a finishing position and takes away payout. Place and show come from their own pools; a 4/1 horse might place at $4.60 one day and $5.80 the next.
WIN $10.00
$4.60
SHOW $3.20
BRIDGE-JUMPERS
A bridge-jumper drops a huge show bet, often $20,000, on a heavy favorite for five to ten cents on the dollar. If it runs fourth, every other show ticket explodes.

EVERY RACE, EVERY TRACK
Win is always open. Place and show pools close in fields of five or fewer.

W-P-S VS. THE FIELD
One horse, one finish threshold. The rest stack bets or add horses and races.
1x
W / P / S
One horse, one position threshold, one payout.
3x
ACROSS BOARD
All three on one horse; triple cost, stacked pay.
1-2
EXACTA
Two horses, first and second in exact order.
2R
DAILY DOUBLE
Winners of two straight races on one ticket.
WRAPPING IT UP
Win pays the most and needs first. Place pays less and takes first or second. Show pays the least and takes any of the top three, at the same price no matter the spot. Match the bet to your confidence, and watch the show pool for bridge-jumpers.
BET YOUR CONFIDENCE
FIVE RULES BEFORE YOU BET
The right bet depends on how sure you are, not on which one sounds smartest. Sure it wins? Bet to win. A contender that could get beat? Place. Just want a ticket in the mix? Show.
01
MATCH CONFIDENCE
Win when sure, place when close, show to cash.
02
READ THE POOLS
Not set by win odds; 4/1 can pay pennies to show.
03
SHORT FIELDS
Five or fewer runners can mean win betting only.
04
NO 1/5 TO SHOW
Twenty cents on the dollar isn’t worth a fourth.
05
WATCH THE POOL
Big show pool on one favorite pays if it misses.
